Kindergarten Program | Discovery School

Discovery School’s Kindergarten program blends hands-on learning, academic excellence, and whole-child development to create a dynamic and engaging educational experience. Rooted in a child-centered philosophy, our program nurtures curiosity, independence, and a lifelong love of learning. In our Kindergarten program in San Antonio, children actively participate in whole group lessons, small group instruction, and engaging center-based activities. As a result, students develop essential literacy and math skills in a supportive, nurturing environment.

A Hands-On, Enriched Kindergarten Experience

Our Kindergarten curriculum is designed to develop strong literacy and math foundations through a balance of:

  • Whole group instruction

  • Small group learning

  • Center-based exploration

  • Independent work

  • One-on-one teacher support

Through our unique Weekly Contract Centers, students actively engage in literacy and numeracy activities across all subject areas. These include art, dramatic play, science, block building, and listening centers—allowing children to move freely while building independence, time management, and accountability.

Each center is intentionally designed to meet students where they are, offering both support and challenge through differentiated instruction.

Literacy Development & Writing Growth

Our literacy program integrates research-based methods aligned with the Science of Reading, including:

  • Phonemic awareness and phonics instruction

  • LiPS (Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing Program)

  • Sight words and word families

  • Spelling and grammar conventions

Students grow as writers through a developmentally appropriate progression:

  • Drawing and pictorial storytelling

  • Beginning sounds and letter formation

  • Inventive spelling

  • Structured sentence and story writing

Through Writer’s Workshop, students explore storytelling, illustrations, and presentation skills—building confidence as they share their work with peers.

Guided Reading groups provide individualized instruction using leveled readers and take-home books, allowing each child to progress at their own pace.

Math Curriculum & Concept Mastery

Our Kindergarten math program builds strong foundational skills through hands-on learning and real-world application. Key areas include:

  • Number sense and rote counting

  • Addition and subtraction

  • Place value and skip counting

  • Geometry and measurement

  • Money and time

  • Fractions and data interpretation

Students use manipulatives, games, and interactive activities to deepen understanding, supported by targeted small group instruction.
