Frequently Asked Questions

What Is Discovery School?

Discovery School is a nonprofit, multi-denominational preschool and early elementary school in San Antonio where children learn through play, exploration, and curiosity. Above all, we believe children learn best when they actively engage, feel curious, have fun, and feel safe, supported, and excited to discover the world around them.

What Ages Do You Accept?

We welcome children starting at age two and offer programs through early elementary, including kindergarten and first grade. As children grow and change, teachers intentionally design each classroom to meet them at their developmental stage while also supporting confidence, independence, and curiosity along the way.

What Makes Discovery School Different?

At Discovery School, play truly sits at the heart of everything we do. Rather than focusing on worksheets or rigid instruction, our classrooms invite children to explore, imagine, and ask questions through hands-on, creative experiences. Because of this, children naturally build social skills, strengthen problem-solving abilities, grow their independence, and develop a lifelong love of learning.

You may also hear about a very special visitor at Discovery School: our garden fairy. Each day, the garden fairy leaves small treasures for the children to discover. Through this simple but meaningful tradition, children practice self-control and thoughtfulness by choosing only one treasure a day and, in turn, leaving the rest for their friends.

What Does a Typical Day Look Like?

While no two days look exactly the same, every day offers something new to discover. Throughout the day, children play, create, build, read, move, and learn together. At the same time, our schedule thoughtfully balances teacher-guided activities with plenty of time for child-led play, both indoors and outdoors.

What Are Your School Hours? Do You Offer Part-Time or Full-Time Options?

Discovery School follows an academic-year calendar with weekday classes. Program hours vary by age group, and families may choose from available scheduling options, including part-time or full-time programs depending on the child’s age. When available, extended care options may also be offered. Before the school year begins, we share a detailed calendar with all families to help them plan ahead.

How Does Learning Happen Through Play?

Through play, children gain the freedom to experiment, take risks, and better understand the world around them. For example, as children build with blocks, create art, pretend, explore science, and tell stories, they naturally develop early math, language, and social skills, all while having fun.

How Do You Support Social and Emotional Growth? What Is Your Discipline Philosophy?

Social and emotional learning happens every day at Discovery School. Rather than using punitive discipline, teachers guide children with care, consistency, and clear expectations. As children share materials, take turns, express feelings, and build friendships, teachers help them problem-solve, practice empathy, and learn respectful ways to navigate social situations.

What Is Your Teacher-to-Student Ratio?

We intentionally maintain small class sizes so teachers can build strong relationships with each child. Our low teacher-to-student ratios allow educators to support individual needs while fostering a warm, engaging classroom environment.

How Do I Enroll My Child?

To begin enrollment, families complete our registration process and submit required forms by the published deadlines. Typically, we open new family registration at a set time each year and process applications in the order we receive them. If a class fills, we then place families on a waitlist so opportunities remain fair and clear.

Is Financial Assistance Available?

Yes. Discovery School offers scholarships and financial assistance to qualifying families. In this way, we continue to support access and remain committed to welcoming families from a wide range of backgrounds into our community.

What Are Tuition and Fees?

Tuition varies by program and age group, and families pay a registration fee. During registration, we clearly share detailed tuition information, payment options, and important deadlines so families know exactly what to expect.

Do You Offer School Tours?

Yes. We love welcoming prospective families to Discovery School. Tours give families a chance to see classrooms, explore our outdoor spaces, and experience the joyful, play-based environment firsthand.

What Should My Child Bring to School?

Children should come ready to play and explore. Families typically provide a backpack, a lunch or snack as required, and a change of clothes. We share a detailed supply and readiness list with families before the school year begins.

How Does Discovery School Celebrate Families and Traditions?

Just as we value play, we also value family and community. For this reason, families are encouraged to visit classrooms and share holidays, traditions, and celebrations that feel meaningful to their family. Through these shared moments, children learn about one another, build connections, and feel proud of who they are.

How Can Families Be Part of the Discovery School Community?

Families play an important role in our school community. Whether through classroom celebrations, school events, volunteering, or special traditions, parents and caregivers stay actively involved throughout the year and help shape the community experience.
